Spring Embraces Pingshan with Green, Hearts Rooted in a Century-Old Forest -- Ling College Hosts Tree-Planting Commemoration Event

On March 12, 2025, in celebration of China’s Arbor Day, Ling College of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-Shenzhen) launched the “Sowing Verdant Hope” tree-planting campaign in Pingshan District, Shenzhen. The event brought together representatives from CUHK’s United College and CUHK-Shenzhen’s Houhan College. More than 80 participants joined, including Mr. Wu Zhiliu, the deputy head of Pingshan District; Mr. Ling Zhenzhi, representing the benefactors of Ling College; Dr. Chen Heng, the assistant president of CUHK-Shenzhen; Professor Lü Zongli, the dean of Ling College; as well as faculty and student representatives. Together, they planted dozens of *Handroanthus impetiginosus* (Pink Trumpet Trees), honoring the late Professor Ling Daoyang’s philosophy of “Cultivating Trees, Nurturing Minds.”

Planting Green
In his opening address, Professor Lü Zongli delved into the remarkable legacy of Professor Ling Daoyang. In 1928, Professor Ling Daoyang introduced the first Arbor Day in China. Professor Lü emphasized Ling College’s dedication to fulfilling its three - pronged mission: “Fostering Trees, Cultivating Talent, and Inspiring Spirit.” He also explored innovative approaches to sustainable development, stating, “Today’s saplings will offer shade tomorrow; today’s ideals will shape future legacies.”
Lin Yufei, a student representative, shared her experiences in environmental advocacy. She called on her peers to actively support green initiatives and contribute to creating a more harmonious ecosystem.
The ceremony began with guests pouring “water of hope” onto the saplings. This symbolic act represented the nurturing of life and officially launched the 2025 “Sowing Verdant Hope” campaign. Participants then worked together to plant the Pink Trumpet Trees, a species symbolizing gratitude. They also attached commemorative plaques bearing heartfelt wishes for the growth of the trees.
As the tree - planting activity came to an end, Dr. Chen Heng, Professor Lü, and Director Yang Zhoujie placed the final plaque in front of 25 saplings, marking the successful conclusion of the event.
After the tree - planting, the attendees visited the Hakka heritage site, Da Wan Shi Ju, an ancient architectural complex with a history spanning centuries. Amidst the site’s ancient walls, they contemplated the profound wisdom of “harmony between humanity and nature,” drawing inspiration from traditional ecological philosophies.
This event significantly strengthened the connections among Ling College, United College, and Houhan College. Professor Ling Daoyang, a co - founder of CUHK and the namesake of Ling College, once served as the dean of United College. His enduring legacy of “tree - planting and education” continues to bind these institutions together. Last year, Ling College and United College jointly launched the “Greater Bay Area Green Initiative,” promoting cross - border youth cooperation in environmental protection. Meanwhile, Houhan College has been a reliable partner of Ling College in green campus projects. The Arbor Day event further solidified their shared vision.
Guided by its motto, “Self-Cultivation for Strength, Altruism in Action,” Ling College incorporates green philanthropy into its comprehensive education framework. This cross-campus initiative not only showcases its leadership in ecological education but also demonstrates the crucial role universities play in achieving carbon neutrality. Looking ahead, Ling College is committed to expanding its green networks. It aims to pioneer innovative models that seamlessly blend collegiate traditions with sustainability.
